Core formulas

Every fuel cost estimate rests on two equations. Memorise them once and you can sanity-check any app or spreadsheet.

Litres required

Litres needed = Distance (km) ÷ Fuel efficiency (km per litre)

Fuel efficiency is also called mileage or fuel economy. In Nepal, drivers usually speak in kilometres per litre (km/l), not miles per gallon. If your dashboard or owner's manual quotes consumption in litres per 100 km instead, convert first: km/l = 100 ÷ (L/100 km).

Total fuel cost

Fuel cost = Litres needed × Price per litre (NPR)

For a round trip, either double the one-way distance or calculate each leg separately if mileage differs (for example, uphill outbound and downhill return on the Prithvi Highway).

Combined one-line formula

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ km/l) × Price per litre

Some planners add a buffer directly: Buffered cost = Fuel cost × (1 + Buffer %). A 10–15% buffer is reasonable for Nepal's mix of traffic, altitude, and unplanned stops.

Worked example: Kathmandu to Pokhara

Suppose you drive a compact petrol car that averages 14 km/l on the highway but only 11 km/l in Kathmandu valley traffic before you reach the ring road. One-way distance is roughly 200 km. You will use about 20 km of city driving each way and 180 km of highway each way.

  • City leg one way: 20 ÷ 11 ≈ 1.82 litres
  • Highway leg one way: 180 ÷ 14 ≈ 12.86 litres
  • One-way total ≈ 14.68 litres
  • Round trip ≈ 29.36 litres

If petrol is NPR 178 per litre on the day you travel:

29.36 × 178 ≈ NPR 5,226 for fuel alone, before a 10% buffer.

With a 12% buffer for detours and AC use: 5,226 × 1.12 ≈ NPR 5,853.

Compare that to a single lump-sum estimate using average mileage only: 400 km ÷ 13 km/l ≈ 30.8 litres × 178 ≈ NPR 5,482. Splitting city and highway segments is more accurate when conditions differ sharply.

Worked example: Motorcycle hill route

A 150 cc motorcycle might achieve 45 km/l on flat tar but only 35 km/l on a steep graveled section. For a 120 km mixed route at NPR 178/l:

  • Flat 80 km: 80 ÷ 45 ≈ 1.78 L
  • Hill 40 km: 40 ÷ 35 ≈ 1.14 L
  • Total ≈ 2.92 L × 178 ≈ NPR 520 one way

Motorcycles look cheap on paper, but luggage, two riders, and headwinds can drop efficiency by 10–20%—worth noting on mountain passes.

Factors that change real-world mileage

Load and passengers

Every extra 100 kg roughly increases fuel use on small cars. Roof racks and top boxes add aerodynamic drag at highway speeds.

Air conditioning and altitude

AC compressors load the engine; on long climbs toward Nagarkot or Daman, you may see km/l fall even without AC because the engine works harder in thin air.

Road surface and driving style

Stop-start traffic in Bharatpur or Biratnagar burns more fuel per kilometre than steady 60–80 km/h cruising where road conditions allow. Aggressive acceleration and high-idling at checkpoints also add hidden litres.

Fuel quality and vehicle maintenance

Under-inflated tyres, dirty air filters, and delayed servicing reduce efficiency. If your last three tank averages show 12 km/l but you budget at 15 km/l, your trip fund will fall short.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using brochure mileage: Manufacturer "combined cycle" figures are optimistic. Budget from your own fill-up logs over at least three tanks.
  • Ignoring return-leg differences: Downhill return trips sometimes improve km/l; uphill outbound worsens it. Do not assume symmetry without reason.
  • Stale fuel prices: Check NOC-published rates or pump boards the week you travel. A NPR 5/l swing changes a 30-litre trip by NPR 150.
  • Forgetting non-fuel costs: Parking, highway maintenance fees where applicable, and emergency reserves are separate line items.
  • Diesel vs petrol confusion: Enter the price for the fuel your engine actually uses. Mixing them destroys the estimate entirely.
  • One-number round trips: If you refuel mid-route where prices differ (Terai vs hill stations), split the calculation by segment.

Building a simple trip budget spreadsheet

List each leg: origin, destination, km, expected km/l, litres, NPR/l, subtotal. Sum subtotals, apply buffer, add tolls and contingency. Keep a column for "actual litres" when you return. Over three or four trips you will have a personalised efficiency profile that beats any generic table.
