How it's calculated

Future value ≈ P × (1 + i)^n. Past purchasing power ≈ P / (1 + i)^n when running backwards as implemented.

Example

Example: Inflation Calculator

Inputs

  • Present Value: 100000
  • Inflation Rate: 5
  • Years: 10

Outputs

  • Future Cost: 162889.46
  • Purchasing Power Loss: 62889.46
  • Today Value Of Future Money: 61391.33

This example uses typical sample values. Adjust the inputs above to see how the results change for your own numbers.

About this calculator

Inflation quietly taxes cash. This calculator grows or shrinks a sum using the annual inflation rate and years you assume, so a “NPR 50,000 emergency fund” has a purchasing-power footnote.

Nepal NSO /Timestamp CPI is not auto-fetched. Enter a rate you trust (or a conservative 6–7% teaching rate). This is not a salary-negotiation mandate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Future cost = present × (1 + i)^years. Purchasing-power loss = future − present. Today’s value of a future amount uses the inverse (deflate). Compound inflation, not simple i × years.
Paste a rate you trust (NRB/NSO historical CPI, or a planning assumption). The default 5% is a placeholder, not an official forecast.
No. It inflates a cash amount. Investment real return ≈ nominal − inflation is a separate approximation (and not exact Fisher).
Schema max 50% per year. For teaching only at the cap.
If wages rise at the same i, “today value” stays comparable. This tool does not model wage growth unless you change present value.
Years can be fractional in the schema (step 0.01). For 6 months use 0.5.
Run twice with each CPI assumption. PPP is not included.
House prices can diverge from headline CPI. Use a housing index if that is the question.
Min rate is 0 in the schema. Deflation is not modelled.
It is lost purchasing power vs today’s basket, not a bank debit.
