How it's calculated

Tiles = ceil(area ÷ tile area) × (1 + wastage). Convert all dimensions to one unit first.

About this calculator

Tile boxes are sold in pieces, not square metres. This calculator converts room area into tile count using the tile face size and a wastage percent for diagonal layouts and cuts around toilets.

Keep 5–10% extra from the same batch; monsoon replacements may not match shade. Layout direction (straight vs herringbone) changes offcuts more than the formula reveals — raise wastage for complex bathrooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Room area (length × width, metres) ÷ one tile’s area (tile L × W in centimetres, converted). Then × (1 + wastage %). Default tile 60×60 cm, 10% waste, 4 tiles per box for box count.
Cuts, breakage and pattern. Diagonal layouts or small rooms can need 12–15%; large open floors maybe 5–8%.
Used to convert piece count to boxes (ceil). Check the carton you will buy — 60×60 packs are not always 4.
Same area math. For walls, enter the wall rectangle and deduct openings off-engine if needed.
Not subtracted. Tight joints, the area formula slightly over-orders, which is safer than under-ordering.
Add rectangles. L-shapes as two rooms.
Extra running metres are not in the room rectangle. Add skirting tiles separately.
Tile fields are centimetres (default 60). 600 mm = 60 cm.
One size per run. Calculate each SKU separately.
Planning quantity. Bond, niches and spoilage still move the last box.
